Automotive Photography Tips

As a Professional Photographer I have photographed lots of different things and events from music festivals, golf days, horse racing, air shows & many motor sport events.

Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival are some of my favourites. At these events I was commissioned to photograph the action, not your normal static automotive shots.  As I have always loved cars I thought I would set my self the challenge of learning Automotive Photography and see what level I can get to. I will be writing this blog post about Automotive Photography Tips during the project giving hints, tips along the way and also problems I come across, hopefully this can save you from making the same mistakes or teach you something new.

Automotive Photography Tips

The main problem with becoming a Professional Photographer is that when you start out you photograph what you want and enjoy, normally of your favourite sport/interest, what ever it is, you get to choose. When you start getting paid you are just excited about making money from your photography.  As you get more to a more professional level a lot of your work will evolve and you will be shooting more of what the client wants and less of what you enjoy.  If you are very lucky and good enough eventually you can be more choosy about which jobs you decide to take on.

Automotive Photography Tips

Unfortunately this means you get less time to shoot personal projects.  However these are very important to do as it can energise and spur on your creativity.  It helps bring back the spark and reminds you of why you started photography. If you have an idea, get together with people that can help or be a part of the shoot, brainstorm your ideas and do it!

Automotive Photography Tips

I have always had personal project ideas but rarely do anything about them.  After looking at other Automotive Photographer’s work it inspired me to get some shots myself.

How to shoot Automotive & Car Photography?

I started by searching lots websites, Photographs, and Blogs on Automotive Photography Tips. Now I have read the basics on automotive photography I am going to try and put it into practice.

The Cars

I an ideal world we want to be shooting classic or exotic cars but this is difficult in practice unless you know someone with one.  But also whats the point until you can take really good shots?

The Location

I also started to think of what locations would make a great Automotive Photography Photograph? An empty car park, a zig zag road, an urban background, etc.  I had think of places I knew and place that are not too busy as people get in the way when shooting.

Inspiration

Whilst I try to organise more cars to shoot I have been researching all the time online.  I have been looking at lots of other Automotive Photographers websites & Google images. This can be great for inspiration and ideas not only for cars, but locations too.

Top 10 Tips

There are lots of websites that have short and simple tips to set you off in the right direction. Here are a few I found most useful.

Jalopnik – Top 10 Automotive Photography Tips

Tuts+ – 10 Tips on Creative Car Photography

Finding Cars to Shoot

My search for cars goes on.  I found this the most difficult part as most of us don’t have easy access to supercars.  But already I have made a few networks and hope to work out some days to shoot the cars in the next month or two.  I have joined some local car groups and been to some meets/events.  If you see a car would like to shoot, just ask the owner. Car people love their cars and spend lots of money on them.  Most would love to have some photographs of the car.  If they say no, don’t worry just move on to the next.

Location Scouting

With the research as mentioned above I have been thinking about the types of shot/background I want.  I have been driving around my local area in Hampshire looking for places I would like use to shoot some Automotive Photography.

Angles

Take your time, walk around the car and surrounding areas to get some ideas and look for potential shots/angles.  Try some very close for detail shots, then some medium

Ongoing Research

I have been looking at different types of Automotive Photography to help me understand the varied styles and methods of how you get the different type of shots.

Static

Static automotive photography is when the car is not moving.  These are the best shots to start teaching your self automotive photography as you can get some great shots even if you have very basic kit.  Park the car, the better the location/background the better the shot will be(Below is a very basic example) Ideally you want to get yourself a Tripod so your camera is still(this will stop camera shake and blurry shots) and so your shot is sharp. This also means if it is low light you can run a long exposure to allow more light in to the shot, this helps get a more even light in your background instead of blasting the car with flash and a dark background.

Automotive Photography Tips

Shot by Harry Elliott Photography

Panning

Panning(motion blur) shots are when the car is moving past the camera. This type of automotive photography keeps the car sharp, but the wheels and background blur giving the appearance of speed/motion.  This technique is a bit more difficult to master as you have to get your shutter speed just right.  If the shutter is too fast the wheels and background are sharp then it looks like the car is not even moving. If the shutter speed is to slow it will just be a big blurry mess.

Automotive Photography Tips

Rolling & Rig Shots

Rig shots use a boom(Long Bar), suction pads and clamps to mount the camera rig to the car. This gives a similar effect as a panning shot with the car sharp and the wheels/background blurred. The main difference with using a rig is you can place the camera almost anywhere around the car giving you a more dynamic shot.

My Practice Shots

First Shoot

I started with my Car and have only a couple of shoots so far to work on the general technique. What angles of the car look best, how long the exposure should be (this depends on lots of things).  On some shots I used natural light, ambient light and other I used some flash to light the car.  Its quite fun experimenting.  The first shot was rubbish, but that was expected.  After 10 – 20 minutes of trying different things my shots got much better(Not quite pro level) but as long as there always improving or your learning from your mistakes then it is a good thing.

This was my first attempt.

 Fareham Wheel Specialist Open Day

This was a small local meet with around 50-100 cars.  As it was close by it was a chance to get some shots, practice angles that did or didn’t work for automotive photography. The problem i have found with meets like this is there almost always in a car park/industrial estate with messy backgrounds like skips/bins in shot. But if you find a car that you really like it can be a great opportunity to talk to the owner.  You can exchange details and arrange a shoot at a better location on another day. Also any shots you get of peoples car on the day is a great way of adding to your social media followers/likes by posting up a gallery from the event.

The shot above of the BMW M3 is the best shot of the day and has been the most popular on Instagram. Find me on Instagram – Click Here

I shot around 150-200 shots at this event but only uploaded less than half of that to the gallery.  Only select your best shots, if there good people will want to work with you and let you shoot their cars. These 2 are my personal favourite I shot that day.  I like the negative space on the shot below as its different from having the car full frame and the lines make it more interesting than a plain wall.

Hampshire BMW Owners Club Monthly Meet

This was my first time meting with the group.  The location this month was Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth. There were about 20-30 member at the meet this month with a range on BMW’s including 1 Series, 3 Series, Z3 & Z4.

Goodwood Breakfast Club

Goodwood’s Breakfast club kicked off this year with Supercar Sunday, it should have been named Super Wet Sunday as the weather was heavy rain for the first half. It soon dried up and there was still a good turn out of cars and crowds.

With this Porsche 911 Carrera RS(Below) I was trying something a little different from my usual style with a lot more negative space around the car.

This is probably one of my favourite shots of the year at Goodwood Breakfast Club of the McLaren F1 GTR(Below). I has very little editing on it. Shot with just the natural light.

Automotive Photography Tips

I shot the McLaren 12c(Below) just a few minutes apart from the F1 GTR(Above) and many people think that the car was lit, it was just natural light.  The morning and evening can give you great light.  Many Photographers prefer using natural light.  But it just goes to show that you don’t need lots of expensive lighting to get a great shot.

What to do first?

Tickets

Goodwood Festival of Speed is always popular and the weekend tickets almost always sell out. You have to order them early to avoid disappointment. I recommend the weekend ticket as there is so much to see you cant really manage it all in a day.  The Thursday is the quiet day, Friday more busy, Saturday & Sunday are extremely busy as its the weekend.  These 2 days also have the most going on in terms of Cars, Drivers, Celebrities etc.

Traveling to & from Goodwood Festival of Speed

Car

Many people living in the surrounding areas drive as normally its only a 30 – 60 minute drive.  During Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014, I would at least double if not triple journey times due to the traffic.  If your taking your car book a Car Park Ticket before you travel.  You can do this when buying your ticket.  Pack food and water in your car as you may need it when stuck in traffic. Leave home early, really early so dont get stuck in lots of traffic!

Bus

Many of the bus companies will extras buses and special services to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.  There is a free bus shuttle service to and from Chichester Train Station which is only .

Train

Chichester Train Station is the closest to the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014. There is a free bus shuttle service to and from Chichester Train Station to the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014.

Motorbike/Pedal Bike

If you live close enough to cycle or own a motorbike this is a good way to travel as you don’t have to sit in the traffic jams.

Helicopter / Plane

Many companies offer a flight service to and from the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014.  Also if your lucky enough to have your own Helicopter or Plane you can fly to Goodwood Aerodrome just a few minutes away from the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014.

Goodwood Breakfast Club – Automotive Photography

Posted on by Harry Elliott

Goodwood Breakfast Club Photographer

As Professional photographer and a lover of cars I am often at goodwood events such as Festival of Speed, Revival & Goodwood Breakfast Club.  I have been to a few of the breakfast club meetings such as Italian Sunday 2013 and I took my own car for the Hot Hatch Sunday 2014. I often shoot for goodwood and car companies at goodwood for events & PR.

Goodwood Breakfast Club

Its not long now until the 2015 Goodwood Breakfast Club season starts with Supercar Sunday on the 3rd May at Goodwood Motor Circuit just outside Chichester, West Sussex. It will be an early with the event open at 8am until 12noon. I normally like to get there early for easy parking before the crowds arrive.

I have added some Goodwood Breakfast Club Photographs below and post some to the Goodwood Breakfast Club  Facebook Page.

Goodwood Breakfast Club Dates 2015

3rd May Supercar Sunday

Ultimate high-performance machines – both cars and bikes – and the greatest free supercar show on the planet? A Goodwood favourite returns!

It was a very wet start to the event but still a really good turn out of cars and people. Heavy rain meant that many people were sheltering in the Pit Lane area for the first hour of so.  Once it had almost stopped raining and everyone was having teas & coffees to warm up, the crowds started to fill the track. There were some fantastic cars along the grid straight including Ferrari’s La Ferrari, Ford GT40, Pagani Zonda C12 and cars from Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lotus and more.

7th June Soft-Top Sunday

Anything but the roof! Classic and modern soft-tops, T-tops, targas, and ‘no-tops-at-all’, resplendent in the Sussex summer sunshine. Get your tops off and come and join the party…

2nd August Thoroughbred Sunday

Turning the clock back to the golden era of the Goodwood Motor Circuit, this is the big day for pre-1966 cars and bikes. Motoring nostalgia doesn’t get better than this, and like every other Breakfast Club it’s free to join the fun!

4th October Vee-Power Sunday

Heavy rain reduced the turn-out, but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of thousands of Breakfast Clubbers who braved the weather when we ran Vee-Power as a theme in 2014. But don’t worry if you missed it, because we love the Vee-Power concept so much we’re running it again in 2015 – a Breakfast Club dedicated to the glory that is the vee engine, from vee-twin motorcycles to mighty V16 Cadillacs!

1st November ‘Bahn-stormer Sunday

Fun, fun, fun didn’t start with Kraftwerk – Auto Unions were setting records on the first stretch of German Autobahn as early as 1935. So we’d love to see some pre-war beasties at our new for 2015 ‘bahn-stormer’ themed Breakfast Club, but does anyone else get misty-eyed over of old magazine road-test mentions of 155mph ‘limiters’ on BMWs and Mercs from the 1980s? If your ‘modern’ machinery could crack the magic 155mph fresh from the showroom – this theme is for you too!

Festival-of-Speed-Photographer-McLaren-HE3_1438

Over the past fews years I have been lucky enough to be a Goodwood Festival of Speed Photographer and see some amazing cars, it’s great to see mclaren at festival of speed as they make some of the fastest production road cars today and they are beautiful.  Here are a few shots I have taken at previous festival of speed events.

The McLaren P1 designed with the aerodynamics of a Formula One car. The car is hand built not too far from goodwood.

Top speed – 217mph

As you look at the cars they almost space age and everything on them is there for a purpose not just to look pretty.  But these aerodynamic lines looking amazing and draw your eye up and over the car.

“The best-looking cars are the ones with real substance as well as style. The McLaren P1™ is a stunning piece of automotive design, but you won’t find any needless ornaments or frivolous styling features on it. Every surface has been designed to work, every part given the same aerodynamic consideration as if it was part of an aircraft or a Formula 1™ car.”

Many people living in the surrounding areas drive as normally its only a 30 – 60 minute drive.  During Goodwood Festival of Speed 2015, I would at least double if not triple journey times due to the traffic.  If your taking your car book a Car Park Ticket before you travel.  You can do this when buying your ticket.  Pack food and water in your car as you may need it when stuck in traffic.

Kitesurfing Armada

Virgin Kitesurfing Armada 2014 – Hayling Island

The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada is a weekend kitesurfing festival held every year at CBK beach, on the south west of Hayling Island. We are 100% focused on kitesurfing, so the festival operates using a wind window format, and will run the first weekend of good wind on either 13/14 September, 27/28 September or 11/12 October 2014.  This year it was 11/12 October 2014.

The event brings together kitesurfers and their families, the kitesurfing industry and the public for one awesome weekend. The aim is to Break the World Record for kitesurfing on the water, alongside a festival including international kite brands, pro kitesurfers, kite films, music, bars, entertainment and fundraising for a good cause.

At about 1pm all the kite surfers headed to the beach into the allocated starting zones.  The set up began with kites being inflated, lines laid out and wetsuits in place.

The Armada itself has a target to get over 500 GPS tracked kitesurfers to ride together in convoy between Hayling Island to Pagham, 15 miles down the coast. To pull this off is a big challenge.  The day started slow due to almost no wind at all.  As the afternoon passed the wind slowly picked up and everyone had their fingers crossed.

At about 3pm the wind was up.  It’s Go Go Go, kite surfers start launching their kites and the first ones started entering the water. Within half an hour there were hundreds of kite surfers joining the Kitesurfing Armada.

Goodwood Breakfast Club Hot Hatches 2014

Posted on by Harry Elliott

This meeting titled “Hot Hatches” started off with a beautiful crisp summer/autumn morning.  Arriving early with one of my own Hot Hatches  I made the most of the morning light before the crowds arrived.

There was an amazing range of old and new cars including Audi, BMW, Mitsubishi, VW and many more.

It was a chilly start with the crowds queuing for teas & coffees.  Fuelling people for the day ahead, breakfasts starting at 7.30am with the classic full english and bacon sandwiches. Later on the paddocks and the grid were completely full with cars as far as the eye can see.

The weather was Beautiful all morning at Hot Hatches which kept the crowds pouring in to admire the great collection of Hatchbacks.
